Defensive sprays are considerably cheaper than other means of defense, such as telescopic batons and electric stun guns. Nevertheless, they are very effective in defending yourself in a critical situation, and their big advantage over batons and electric stun guns is that you can use them to defend yourself from a distance, without the need of physical contact. SELECTION BY ACTIVE SUBSTANCE

The most common active ingredients contained in defensive sprays are CS, OC and CP.

- CS (o-Chlorobenzylidenemalodinitrile) - is a more modern and inherently more potent substance than CN (Chloroacetophenone), which was used as a tear gas around the middle of the 20th century. When used on an attacker, it causes irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes. As this substance is less of a burden on the body, its effect is more rapid than that of the older type of CN, but it wears off more quickly. The CS substance is suitable for defense against attacking people. Popular defensive sprays with this active substance are the KKS GmbH and Umarex sprays.

- OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) - is an extract from extremely hot chili peppers. It causes rapid and violent burning of the eyes, facial skin, irritation of the respiratory tract and in some cases even a feeling of vomiting. It is also suitable and effective for defense against attacking animals. Some manufacturers are in the habit of indicating the strength of OC sprays by means of so-called Scoville heat units (SHU). Therefore, you may see the spray label state '10,000,000 SHU'. However, according to most experts, these units are not very reliable and are more likely to simply impress the consumer with a high number in the millions. If you are intrigued by the active ingredient OC, we rather recommend to focus on the choice of the spray according to the concentration of this active ingredient contained in it. The cheapest group of sprays with OC are those with a concentration of up to 2%, such as OC NATO AMERICAN 40 ml. A popular spray with a concentration of up to 10% is e. g. PERFECTA OC STOP ATTACK. For the most demanding, there are also sprays with a concentration of up to 15%, such as OC POLICE JET. The fact that OC is indeed very effective is confirmed by the fact that in some countries it is completely banned or its concentration in sprays is limited by law.

- CP - is a synthetic and extremely irritating substance. Already a concentration of 0.10 % is equivalent to approximately 30 % of the concentration of the active substance OC. The effects are essentially the same as those of OC, but even more intense. SELECTION ACCORDING TO THE FORM OF THE DEFENSIVE SPRAY

- Mist spray - this form is particularly suitable if you want to defend yourself outdoors, i. e. in open spaces. As the active substance is sprayed onto the attacker, there is no need to aim the spray so precisely at the face as in the case of the so-called liquid shot (stream sprays). An example of a mist spray is e. g. OC US POLICE 40 ml.

- Stream spray - on the contrary, this will be a suitable form if you need to defend yourself indoors (for example, a waitress in a nightclub). The active substance is not sprayed as mist in this case, but is sent at the attacker with a jet. Thus, you only hit the attacker, you do not hit other people in the room and you do not contaminate the room with the active substance as in the case of a mist spray. The disadvantage compared to the mist spray is that you have to keep a cool head and aim at the attacker's face as best you can when defending yourself. An example of a stream spray is e. g. PEPPER JET 40 ml.

- Gel and foam sprays - sprays in the form of gel or foam are among the most expensive. The point of this form of defensive sprays is to ensure that the effects of the spray last as long as possible and are as difficult to remove as possible. This is because by removing the gel or foam from the face, the attacker absorbs the active ingredient even more and spreads it to other places. Good quality sprays in these forms are the German sprays POLICE RSG GEL and POLICE RSG FOAM.

- Spray size - volumes of defense sprays start from about 15 ml. The advantage of such small sprays is their tiny size, you can hide them even in the smallest pocket. The range of the active substance due to the low pressure in the container is realistically only around 1 to 1.5 m. Therefore, for reliable defense, we recommend choosing a spray with a volume of at least 40 ml, where the range of the substance is approximately 2 to 3 meters.

- Large sprays - sprays with a volume of over 100 ml are more suitable for armed forces to disperse crowds or to defend against large animals. Defensive sprays can be bought with a volume of 300 ml, 400 ml or up to 750 ml. Sprays with such a large volume have a range of the active substance of up to 10 m.

- Camouflaged sprays - are those that are hidden in an object that imitates the shape of, for example, a key chain or a pen. They are therefore very discreet and compact.

- Sprays with light - the trigger head is equipped with a very powerful diode, which is able to dazzle the attacker in the dark for a few seconds and confuse him. It can also serve as a flashlight during an evening stroll while you have an effective means of defense at your immediate disposal. A popular defensive spray with light is e. g. TORNADO 40 ml.
