WHAT ARE PARACORDS AND ROPES?
Paracord is a short for the phrase parachute cord. Invention of paracord was due to the creation of a synthetic fabric called nylon, which was and is commonly used to make items such as toothbrushes, clothing, backpacks, and various cases. The original paracord used for making parachutes has the designation PARACORD 550. The 550 designation means that it should support a load of 550 pounds (about 250 kg). Paracord with this designation has a specific and certified method of braiding nylon fibers. A cheaper substitute for nylon paracords and ropes are cords and ropes made of polypropylene.
WHAT TO CHOOSE PARACORD OR ROPE ACCORDING TO?
Genuine paracords and ropes are made of nylon with the PARACORD 550 marking. For normal use, cords and ropes made of nylon are the most suitable in terms of strength and durability. Such paracords and ropes are produced in different diameters; the thicker the cord is the more durable and solid it is. Polypropylene cords and ropes are slightly less durable and solid, but they are very lightweight and therefore they can, for example, float on the surface of the water. The price of paracords and ropes made of polypropylene is lower. Both polypropylene and nylon paracords and ropes are offered in different lengths (e. g. paracord 5 m, 15 m, 30 m), with different diameters (e. g. paracord 2 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm) and in different colors (e. g. green, black, brown, or camouflage).
WHAT CAN PARACORD AND ROPE BE USED FOR?
Paracord or rope should not be lacking in the equipment of any fan of outdoor, bushcraft and survival activities, or hiking enthusiasts. They can be used for a variety of strength purposes, such as tying an item to a backpack, tying various items together, and tensioning and anchoring a tent while camping. Long paracords and ropes can also be used to tie up group members while hiking in case you get lost and it gets dark. It can be shortened by cutting the rope or cord and then searing the end with a lighter to prevent fraying. Because paracords and ropes are made of synthetic material, they are flammable, so in an emergency you can also use them as kindling to start a fire. Keep in mind, however, that commonly used paracords and ropes are not intended for use in extreme situations, such as rock climbing and other mountaineering activities.
