Shooting goggles - essential equipment to protect your eyesight

Shooting goggles as a form of eye protection should be part of every shooter's shooting equipment. Of course, it is necessary to distinguish which safety goggles are enough for an airsoft player and which are needed for a sports shooter from a proper firearm. Read on and we will advise you how to choose the right one.

SMALL CALIBER WEAPONS

If you are the owner of a weapon with a relatively low energy projectile, e.g. flobert guns, air guns or airsoft guns, you will also need a certain degree of quality shooting goggles, because using only cheap sunglasses as protection during shooting is definitely not enough. As lower caliber weapons are at greater risk of ricocheting the projectile or only of its part, it is necessary that the goggles are made of durable polycarbonate, which meets at least the minimum standards expressed in technical standards (e.g. EN 166: 2001). For a shooter from such weapons, quality goggles, also referred to as work goggles, will be sufficient. A proven manufacturer of quality goggles in the price range from about 10 Euros to 20 Euros is the company 3M, which offers a wide range of durable safety goggles of various shapes with durable clear or colored polycarbonate lenses.

LARGER CALIBERS WEAPONS

If you are the owner of a proper firearm, i.e. weapons of .22 LR caliber and more, your shooting goggles should be much more durable than standard goggles and should have also other features. Especially when shooting from older weapons, there is a risk that some of its part or part of the fired cartridge will be destroyed in front of your face, which can seriously endanger your eyes. Shooting goggles must have so-called ballistic resistance, thanks to which polycarbonate glasses can withstand objects falling on the glass surface with high energy. Ballistic resistance is tested according to various standards (e.g. MIL-PRF-31013). Ballistic goggles should have, in addition to proper resistance, also anti-fog technology, scratch-resistant glass surface, durable and flexible frame and high protection against sunlight. The world-famous and proven brand, which deals with the production and development of quality shooting goggles for the armed forces, is the ESS (Eye Safety Systems) brand.

SUITABLE GOGGLES ACCESSORIES

If you are not wearing safety goggles, it is good to store or transport them, e.g. in a suitable case or pouch to protect them from mechanical damage. For cleaning, it is advisable to use cloths designed for this purpose to ensure perfectly clean glasses and an undistorted view through them. If your shooting goggles do not have anti-fog technology, you can prevent fogging with a special spray.
