CROSSBOW COMPOUND

Crossbows are no longer as simple as in the past, and this area of mechanical weapons has undergone a redesign with the integration of modern technologies and a selection of a number of accessories, surface treatment - special camouflage or many other "improvements". Let's talk about them in the following lines.

BASIC DIVISION OF COMPOUND CROSSBOWS

Compound crossbows are the pinnacle of development and we characterize them as follows:
1. Step through models are those whose steps (running boards)  is also a link between the limbs and together form a bow, it is the most powerful and strongest crossbow ever, because the crossbow bow is massive and reinforced by a robust step shape. The running board is faster, the crossbow is more stable and you don't have to tighten your footrest over time. The step does not protrude from the crossbow profile and the crossbow is given its typical hi-tech design called The "step-through" model, which we can say in other words: "go through the bow“. The most popular examples of such crossbows are Barnett Hyperghost 425Guillotine X and Barnett Raptor Pro STR
2. Foot Stirrup  models are compound crossbows with an additional step which is installed with screws on the bow or on the lower part of the front part of the crossbow. Foot Stirrup models are represented by models such as Ek-Archery Accelerator 410 and Blade
3. Reverse compound models are a complete special and you might say that someone just assembled them incorrectly, but the opposite is true, literally. The bow of the reverse crossbow is mounted as if opposite due to the distribution of force. By unconventionally fitting the limbs, the designers reduced the draw weight, which is expressed in pounds Lbs, reduced recoil, and at the same time achieved a relatively high muzzle velocity, often given in Fps (feet per second). In practice, this means that charging or drawing the string is less strenuous while maintaining the high muzzle velocity of the bolt fired. The beauty of the opposite limbs is perfectly balanced, while the traditional crossbows have a center of gravity at the front of the bow, the reversible limbs distribute the weight to the whole body. Examples of such models are Barnett Vicious and Barnett BC Revengeance.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT CROSSBOW IN TERMS OF DRAW WEIGHT?

You should consult a specialist retailer for a crossbow selection. For example, people often mistake the actual performance of a crossbow with draw weight. The value of lbs is often in the product name, e.g. in offer at online stores, but the higher the draw weight (lbs), the more effort you have to exert when drawing. We mentioned above how it works e.g. so-called reverse crossbow, its LBS value is similar to recurve crossbows, but the speed of the flying arrow in units of fps is higher. The average draw weight of powerful compound crossbows is around 185 LBS. Reverse crossbows at the same bolt speed work with a draw weight of only 135 LBS. The parameter, which is the length of the draw, is also important. It is the distance between the drawn and not-drawn string. If you are lower, we recommend the crossbow more compact. So-called cocking devices are also available. CCD (Crank cocking device), with which drawing is simple, comfortable, but again lengthy. They are manufactured to the exact models of the manufacturer and may not be available for all models.

TIPS AND ADVICE

Never shoot empty, your strings or, in the worst case, your bow limbs may break. Most crossbows have an additional ADF fuse - AntiDryFire, which makes it impossible to fire without a bolt, i.e. empty.

• ADF and fuse position! A common beginner's mistake is the incorrect position of the fuse when drawing the string. The crossbow safety device should always be in the FIRE position - red mark before drawing. After drawing and catching the string in the fuse mechanism, the fuse automatically switches on and moves to the SAFE position. For the shot, it is necessary to switch the fuse back to the FIRE position, but CAUTION! Unless you insert the bolt as instructed and deep enough until you release the ADF fuse latch with the tip of the bolt, the ADF fuse will continue to lock the trigger and prevent the shot from dry-fire.

    • How to draw a powerful crossbow without a drawing cable (cocker)? It is also possible with your hands, but it is necessary to place emphasis on the distribution of the drawing force and placing your fingers close to the path of the rail and thus pull the string until it is caught in the safety of the trigger mechanism. Do not grasp the string towards the cams it is more than likely that you will tear it.

    • Proper use of the cocker, or drawing the cable makes charging the crossbow faster, safer and smoother. Each compound crossbow should have a cocker in the package. Each crossbow model has its own way of establishing a cocker rope, usually just above the stock.  Therefore, it is important to correctly fit the cocker on the string as well as in the groove on the crossbow.

    • Never loosen the limbs on the bow and do not attempt to replace the string or cables. The bow is drawn and under high tension. Replacing the string, cables or limbs belong to a professional service center, where they have a special press for bows and crossbows.
