Looking for the right airgun target for accuracy training or recreational shooting? In this category you'll find paper and metal airgun targets, practical pellet traps, and shooting galleries with folding or moving targets. When choosing, consider the type of ammunition, your airgun's power, where you'll be shooting, and what you're using it for. The right airgun target setup will help you sharpen your accuracy, and models with a built-in trap will also safely catch spent pellets.
What types of airgun targets are there?
Our range includes paper and metal airgun targets, shooting galleries, and pellet traps. Not every metal target is suitable for every air gun, though – it matters whether your airgun fires standard pellets or steel BBs.
PAPER AIRGUN TARGETS
Paper targets are the most widely used type of airgun target. They vary in the design of their scoring rings, artwork, paper thickness, and size. For accuracy training, paper targets are ideal, since every millimetre determines which zone you've hit and how many points you score.
The most common airgun target sizes are:
- 14 × 14 cm – Venox targets or Stil Crin targets
- 17 × 17 cm – Beast Hunter targets
These sizes are commonly used mainly for shooting with pellets. If you're using a CO₂ air pistol with steel BBs, smaller targets can be too small at longer distances, especially with less accurate models. For these types of guns, we recommend shooting at larger targets, such as the single-figure target.
Alongside standard 14 x 14 cm or 17 x 17 cm airgun targets, you can also buy matching pellet traps – these targets slide into the trap, and the trap safely catches the pellets so they don't travel any further.
METAL AIRGUN TARGETS
As a rule, don't shoot steel BBs at metal targets or shooting galleries unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Steel BBs can ricochet off metal targets while also damaging or deforming them. Using your target correctly will help it last longer.
How to choose the right airgun target
When choosing, consider the shooter's experience, where you'll be shooting, and your goal. Beginners tend to do best with a larger paper target, since hits are easier to read. For accuracy training, paper targets with scoring zones work well, while for recreational shooting you might prefer metal targets with falling, spinning, or moving targets.
Indoors, or anywhere space is limited, a pellet trap is the practical choice. Outdoors, you can also use standalone metal targets, but you should always make sure there's a safe area behind the target.
Basic rules for shooting at metal targets:
- Only use ammunition approved by the target's manufacturer. Many metal targets work best with lead pellets, ideally flat-headed ones.
- Choose an appropriate shooting distance based on your airgun's power and the target's material and thickness.
- Wear protective eyewear to guard against ricochets or fragments.
- Check your target regularly. Metal targets wear out over time, so stop using one that's damaged or significantly deformed.
Airgun shooting galleries and pellet traps
An airgun shooting gallery is a device with one or more targets. Some also double as pellet traps, catching any pellets that hit their inner surface, while others consist of separate metal targets and don't catch the pellets at all.
Types of shooting galleries and pellet traps:
- Pellet traps combined with paper targets – the ASG trap for 14 x 14 cm targets, or the Umarex trap for 17 x 17 cm targets.
- Pellet traps with their own built-in targets – the popular Walther gallery with small metal duck-shaped targets, or the Gamo gallery with metal paddle-shaped targets.
- Biathlon-style airgun shooting galleries – for example, the B.O. target
- Metal targets shaped like animals – the Gamo target shaped like a rat or shaped like a squirrel.
- Metal targets with moving and spinning targets – the Wosport target or the Gamo target.
- Combination galleries that let you shoot at either a paper target or metal targets – for example, the Umarex 3-in-1 trap.
Trap-style galleries are practical if you're working with limited space, or if you simply want an easier way to collect spent pellets. That said, a trap is no substitute for a genuinely safe, suitable area behind the target.
If you have a large enough, safe shooting area, standalone metal targets without a trap are also an option. Galleries with moving and spinning targets are better suited to practice and fun than to precise scoring in competitive shooting.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which airgun target is best for a beginner?
For beginners, we recommend larger 17 x 17 cm paper targets or bigger metal galleries with larger targets.
What's the difference between a trap and a gallery?
A trap is technically a type of gallery too, but it has a barrier behind the actual target that stops the pellet from flying further even when you miss. A standard gallery won't catch the pellet if you miss the target.
How does a pellet trap work?
A pellet trap is a type of gallery that either takes paper targets you slide in, or comes with its own metal targets that fall or move when hit. Most metal targets reset once you hit a specific spot or pull a cord. The advantage of a trap is that it catches pellets even when you miss the target inside it – so the pellet doesn't travel any further, which is great for safety and easier on the environment.
How does an airgun's power affect a metal target's lifespan?
Most metal targets, galleries, and traps are made from sheet metal 1 to 3 mm thick. That's durable enough for airguns up to 16 joules at a distance of around 15 m. For more powerful airguns, you'll need an even longer distance or a more heavy-duty metal target – otherwise the pellet may punch straight through it or cause serious damage.
