Maintenance and care of the sleeping bag during use and while camping

After unpacking from the compression sleeve, allow the sleeping bag to breathe to gain volume.

In the morning when you wake up, let the sleeping bag air out, preferably spread out in the sun (or hanged on the clothes line or over a tent) to let the moisture evaporate.

For carrying in a compression sleeve, never fold it carefully into its packing. It should be stuffed in as it comes to hand and unfolded again as soon as possible. If it is folded nicely, the material becomes stressed in repeatedly folded places and so the lifetime is reduced.

The bag should be as dry as possible when in use. However, conditions and weather are not ideal everywhere. Therefore, we recommend using an insulating sleeping pad under the sleeping bag - a sleeping mat (it can be inflatable, self-inflating or foam).

Washing the sleeping bag

Don't wash your sleeping bag too often. Frequent washing deteriorates the insulating properties. For feather and down sleeping bags, frequent washing removes fat from the feather structure, reducing the functionality of the sleeping bag.

It is recommended to wash the sleeping bag once a year in summer when conditions are ideal for 'quick' drying in the sun. Small stains or dirt can be removed with a sponge or cloth (damp or soaked in lukewarm soapy water) or a dry brush.

When washing, follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label. Most manufacturers recommend using a special product and not using fabric softener.

Before washing, close all zippers, even Velcro ones, to avoid damaging the fabric and loosen the drawstrings.

Wash the sleeping bag separately - take into account the size of the sleeping bag and the size of the washing machine, also that the sleeping bag takes in a lot of water and the washing machine motor may not be able to cope. It is therefore recommended to wash at home only smaller sleeping bags, or to leave it to the experts, or to wash only in a washing machine that has a large capacity.

Washing on a gentle program - manufacturers recommend a wool or delicate program, max 30°C according to the instructions on the label.

Spinning - again the manufacturer's recommendation should be followed. Some sleeping bags must not be wrung out, some max out at 400 spins to avoid destroying the synthetic fibers and texture.

Drying the sleeping bag

The sleeping bag should be unfolded horizontally, e.g. on a drying rack, and left to dry freely. The down sleeping bags should be shaken regularly during drying to evenly distribute the feather fluffs. Sleeping bags with synthetic fillings must not shag. Sleeping bags must not be placed on a radiator.

Some synthetic or feather sleeping bags can also be tumble dried. A gentle program or feather program should be set and tennis or special dryer balls should be added to the dryer to help with fluffing/shaking of feather sleeping bags. If you don't have balls, the sleeping bag needs to be removed and shaken. After tumble drying, you need to check all drawstrings, their buckles and all zippers - and lubricate them (either with a special product designed for this or a natural alternative such as beeswax).
