RIFLESCOPES WITH PARALLAX

What is parallax?

Simply put, parallax is an optical error in which the reticle appears to “move” or “float” over the target when you slightly move your head or eye away from the centre of the scope, because the target and the reticle are not in the same focal plane.

How adjustable parallax works

Adjustable parallax allows this error to be corrected using an adjustable objective lens, which is typically marked in the scope parameters as AO (adjustable objective) or as side focus (side parallax adjustment). By correcting parallax, the internal lenses are shifted so that the target image and the reticle are in the same focal plane, ensuring accuracy especially at varying distances and higher magnification. Parallax is usually adjusted manually by rotating the objective lens or another control.

Instead of the abbreviation AO, you may more often encounter the term adjustable parallax in scope descriptions.

WHEN SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A SCOPE WITH ADJUSTABLE PARALLAX?

Adjustable parallax is most commonly found on variable magnification rifle scopes (ZOOM), where the risk of parallax error is more pronounced. However, there are also fixed magnification scopes equipped with adjustable parallax.

If a scope DOES NOT have adjustable parallax

If a scope does not feature adjustable parallax, it is usually factory-set to a specific distance (e.g. 100 m). This is sufficient for general shooting, but outside this distance some inaccuracy may occur.

If you are choosing a scope for an air rifle with power up to 16 joules, capable of accurate shooting up to approximately 30 m, it is not necessary to select a scope with adjustable parallax. However, if you use a powerful hunting rifle and shoot at distances over 100 m, a scope with adjustable parallax will definitely be beneficial.

When you NEED parallax adjustment:

Not every shooter needs this feature. Decide based on the distance and the type of firearm you use. Adjustable parallax is useful if:

  • you shoot at longer distances (approx. 50–100 m)
  • you use high magnification (ZOOM) – parallax error becomes more noticeable and adjustment helps sharpen the image
  • you practise sport or target shooting

Proven rifle scope brands

We offer rifle scopes from brands such as GAMO, JS-Tactical, Nikko Stirling, Umarex, Walther, Valiant and others, mainly suitable for lower-calibre firearms with lower projectile energy, such as air guns and rimfire firearms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is parallax?

It is an optical error that causes the reticle to appear as if it moves relative to the target when you move your eye off the optical axis of the scope, because the target and the reticle are not in the same focal plane.

What is adjustable parallax?

Adjustable parallax is marked in scope specifications as AO (adjustable objective) and allows correction of parallax errors, especially at longer distances.

How does adjustable parallax work?

By adjusting parallax, the internal lenses are moved so that the target image and the reticle are in the same focal plane, ensuring accuracy especially at varying distances and higher magnification.
