Why does choosing the right waterproof jacket matter?
Caught out by a sudden downpour in the mountains, or looking for reliable protection when the weather turns cold and wet? A quality waterproof jacket is an absolute wardrobe essential. Whether you're after a rugged waterproof hiking jacket, a compact waterproof cycling jacket, or an insulated waterproof winter jacket, making the right choice is key to your comfort.
Shoppers, however, often get lost in the terminology. So keep this simple rule in mind from the outset: water-repellent and water-resistant fabrics will only shield you from drizzle or light rain. Only a genuinely waterproof material (with a membrane) will keep you dry even in a torrential downpour.
How to choose a waterproof jacket? Key parameters.
If you're looking for a functional waterproof jacket, focus on these four parameters:
- Water column: Determines resistance to water penetration. For the city, 5 000 mm will do. A value of 10 000 mm is the gold standard that a good waterproof hiking jacket should meet. For extreme conditions, look for 20 000 mm and above.
- Breathability: Stops you from stewing in your own sweat under the jacket. If you have your eye on a waterproof running jacket or an ultralight waterproof jacket for active use, look for values from 15 000 g/m²/24h.
- Membranes and technologies: The heart of any jacket is its membrane (e.g. Gore-Tex, DryVent or special laminates from trusted brands). A very comfortable compromise for milder conditions can be a waterproof softshell jacket with an integrated membrane.
- Taped seams and zips: Even the best waterproof jacket will let water in if it doesn't have taped seams on the inside and quality water-resistant zips. And don't forget a hood that cinches down well.
Improved version of the waterproof outdoor jacket, more comfort, durability and reliable performance.

Types of waterproof jackets by use
Waterproof hiking jacket
A waterproof hiking jacket should be lightweight, easy to pack and comfortable even during long wear in the mountains or the forest. It shouldn't restrict your movement, it has to reliably protect against wind and rain, and at the same time vent excess heat well.
- One very popular outdoor model is the Helikon-Tex Pilgrim Anorak Taiga, which combines high durability, protection against wind and rain, and practical pockets suited to bushcraft, hiking and survival activities.
- An ultralight alternative is the Tramontane Wind Pack by Helikon-Tex, which takes up minimal space in your backpack and is ideal for fast hikes or everyday wear in changeable weather. It uses a special nylon that stands up well to wind, and it also has a hidden pocket it packs into, so it's quick and easy to carry.
Waterproof winter jacket
For winter weather, go for an insulated jacket with higher resistance to wind, rain and snow.
- An excellent choice for demanding conditions is the Pentagon Hoplite Parka Woodland. It's a rugged winter jacket suited to the outdoors, hiking, bushcraft and everyday wear through the cold months.
- Another very interesting model is the Helikon-Tex Winter Warden, which pairs the look of an outdoor shirt with the properties of an insulated jacket. It's especially good for layering and for spending time outdoors in autumn and winter.
- For everyday wear in the city and out in nature, the padded Pentagon Aurora Hood puffer also does the job nicely, combining a modern look with practical protection against bad weather.
Waterproof jacket for sport and active use
When running or during active use, low weight and good breathability are the priority. Ultralight models are ideal for fast hikes, cycling or running in light rain.
- A very versatile option is the Pentagon Cloudburst waterproof jacket, which strikes a good balance between rain protection, low weight and comfort on the move.
Work and tactical waterproof jacket
For demanding use, more rugged models with higher durability and practical details are the right fit.
- The Pentagon Atlantic V2.0 waterproof jacket is one of the most versatile tactical jackets, equally at home in rain, wind and cooler weather. Thanks to its functional cut and durable material, it works for the outdoors, hiking and work use alike.
Waterproof softshell jacket
Softshell jackets offer excellent comfort, flexibility and wind protection. Not all of them, however, are fully waterproof like classic membrane jackets.
- A good example of a versatile softshell is the Pentagon Reiner 2.0 softshell jacket, which is suitable for everyday wear, hiking and outdoor activities.
Waterproof jackets by style and use
Women's waterproof jacket
Women's waterproof jackets tend to be lighter, better shaped and focused on comfort in motion. Lightweight outdoor jackets suited to hiking, travel or everyday wear are especially popular.
Men's waterproof jacket
Men's models often put the emphasis on durability, practical pockets and versatile use in the city and outdoors. Outdoor and tactical jackets from top brands such as Pentagon, Helikon-Tex and Brandit are among the most popular options.
Urban and lifestyle jackets
If you're after a jacket for everyday city wear, the Brandit Windbreaker Navy is a great choice. This model combines wind and rain protection with a modern streetwear look.
Fans of the military style may also be drawn to the Brandit MA1 Sweat Hooded Bomber, which builds on the iconic bomber design while offering everyday comfort.
Windproof, waterproof, 10k water column, extremely durable and lightweight, you can pack it in bag.

Caring for your waterproof jacket
Even a quality waterproof jacket needs the right care. For washing, we recommend using special detergents designed for technical clothing. Ordinary fabric softeners can damage the membrane and reduce the material's waterproofing.
After a while, it's worth restoring the DWR layer with a proofing spray or a wash-in proofer. Store the jacket dry and ideally hung loosely, so the membrane isn't damaged and the material isn't needlessly compressed. Dry it only as recommended on the care label and instructions.
Conclusion
Choosing the right waterproof jacket comes down mainly to how you'll use it. For hiking and the outdoors, lightweight models like the Helikon-Tex Tramontane Wind Pack or the Pilgrim Anorak are ideal. For winter weather, more rugged models such as the Pentagon Hoplite or the Winter Warden are a good fit. For everyday wear or an urban style, Brandit jackets or the Pentagon Aurora are an excellent choice.
