Regular air rifle maintenance helps preserve its accuracy, reliability and lifespan. In this article, you'll learn how to clean your air rifle, what tools to prepare, and what to keep in mind when it comes to lubrication and storage.
The most common mistakes made by air rifle owners:
- no maintenance, very irregular maintenance or incorrect maintenance and cleaning of the air rifle,
- using unsuitable cleaning tools,
- neglecting the lubrication of moving parts and mechanisms of the air rifle,
- incorrect air rifle barrel cleaning procedure,
- neglecting the maintenance of the air rifle's metal surfaces,
- leaving a CO2 cartridge permanently installed in the air rifle, ready for use,
- incorrect storage of the air rifle in a damp environment.
What can these mistakes cause over time?
- corrosion of the air rifle's surface,
- seizing or damage to moving parts of the air rifle,
- loss of accuracy,
- shortened service life of certain parts,
- damage to seals in CO2 air rifles.
The manuals supplied with most air rifles specify how often and in what way maintenance should be carried out. For those who no longer have their manuals or cannot find sufficient information in them, we offer this general guide to air rifle maintenance.

How often should you clean and lubricate an air rifle?
- we recommend cleaning the air rifle barrel and checking the condition of moving parts after every shooting session, before storing the rifle,
- at the very least, always clean it after shooting a full tin of pellets (approximately 250 to 500 pellets fired),
- if you shoot very rarely, carry out air rifle maintenance at least once a year,
- if you shoot very rarely and the air rifle remains stored for several weeks or months, check whether corrosion is developing on its surface or inside the barrel.
Remember that the longer you postpone air rifle maintenance, or the more irregularly you carry it out, the greater the risk of damage, reduced service life or loss of accuracy. The more fouled the barrel becomes, the more time you will spend cleaning it.
What do you need to clean an air rifle?
To clean and maintain an air rifle, you will need:
- a cleaning kit for the appropriate calibre (e.g. 4.5 mm / 5.5 mm / 6.35 mm),
- suitable cleaning, lubricating and preservative oils or sprays,
- cleaning brushes,
- impregnated cleaning cloths.
Beware of unsuitable greases, machine and industrial oils, or overly aggressive cleaning agents that are not intended for cleaning, lubricating and preserving air rifles!

Cleaning the air rifle barrel – step-by-step guide
- apply a suitable cleaning or universal oil to the barrel,
- allow it to work for several minutes to several hours, depending on the level of contamination,
- using a brass or nylon cleaning brush suitable for your air rifle's calibre, begin cleaning in the direction of the shot,
- then dry the barrel using a felt or cloth cleaning tip,
- visually inspect the barrel to check whether any dirt remains in the rifling grooves. If necessary, repeat the process until the barrel is completely clean.
For cleaning the air rifle barrel, we recommend the preservative oil KONKOR (in cases of heavy contamination) and BALLISTOL (for normal contamination and regular maintenance).
When using KONKOR spray, avoid contact with plastic or rubber parts. There is a myth that leaving the barrel oiled after cleaning will make pellets travel faster and more accurately. The opposite is true: this would result in significant inaccuracy and a wider shot grouping, which is why the barrel must be wiped dry. Cleaning the barrel in the direction of the shot is not a problem, for example, with a break barrel air rifle. With some other types of air rifles, however, this may be difficult because their design and limited space may not allow a cleaning rod with a brush to be inserted and passed through the barrel in the direction of the shot. In such cases, it is better to use cleaning cords (so-called BoreSnake), remove the barrel, or dismantle other components that obstruct the procedure.
Lubrication and care of external and internal parts
WARNING – always remember that many manuals and warranty conditions state that disassembling an air rifle beyond what is necessary for routine maintenance may result in the loss of warranty! Therefore, follow the instructions in the manual when maintaining your air rifle, or consult your retailer. If you feel that your air rifle is not powerful enough or has lost accuracy despite being regularly maintained, and it is still under warranty, do not start disassembling it. Instead, submit a warranty claim to the retailer.
How and what should you use to lubricate individual parts?
- seals and plastic parts are best treated with silicone oil,
- wooden stocks should only be treated with oils and sprays specifically designed for wooden stocks,
- metal moving parts, such as rods and pins on break barrel air rifles, can be lubricated with, for example, BALLISTOL oil,
- the metal surface of the air rifle can be protected against rust and preserved for long-term storage, for example, with KONKOR spray,
- for quick removal of grease from the surface, you can also use impregnated cleaning cloths.
Specific maintenance requirements for CO2 air rifles
- in most of these air rifles, it is not recommended to leave a CO2 cartridge installed under pressure as a precaution, unless the air rifle is equipped with, for example, a Quick-Piercing system,
- for seal maintenance, it is recommended to use oil-containing cartridges that care for the seals and valves and lubricate the mechanical parts at the following interval: 10 standard cartridges and 1 oil cartridge,
- if the CO2 air rifle has a smoothbore barrel (for shooting steel BBs), there is no need to use brushes for cleaning. A suitable oil, cleaning rod and a piece of cloth are sufficient.
Checking the air rifle after cleaning and maintenance
After performing maintenance, you should carry out a test shooting session. If the shot grouping does not seem right, you may have accidentally disturbed the sights (rear sight) or incorrectly fitted or disturbed the scope while maintaining and cleaning the air rifle. In that case, the sights or scope will need to be adjusted again and the air rifle zeroed.
Proper air rifle storage:
- out of reach of children,
- in a dry place,
- store the air rifle in a nylon case or plastic gun case to protect it from external adverse influences,
- before long-term storage, it is advisable to preserve the air rifle using suitable products.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What oil should I use to clean an air rifle?
Popular oils and sprays for cleaning and lubricating air rifles include products from BALLISTOL and Brunox.
Can I use WD-40 on an air rifle?
This spray can be found in many households. However, it is not suitable for the overall maintenance of an air rifle. It is quite aggressive, evaporates quickly and does not leave a lubricating or preservative layer. It can be used to clean the barrel, but be careful when applying it to other plastic or rubber components of the air rifle, as it may damage them either cosmetically or functionally.
How can I tell if my air rifle needs servicing or repair?
You should pay particular attention if your air rifle has lost power or accuracy, produces a significantly different sound when fired, or if any of the components used to operate the air rifle are not functioning properly.
Do I need to clean my air rifle if I have only fired a few shots?
The ideal approach is to clean the air rifle after every shooting session before putting it away or storing it. However, it is also a good idea to establish a cleaning and maintenance interval, for example, after shooting a full tin of pellets.
