Rifles Mosin vz. 1891/30”, cal. 7,62 x 54 R
After the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-78 when the Russian army still armed with single-shot rifles Berdan clashed with Turkish troops armed with American Winchester rifles, a decision was made to develop new modern rifles for infantry. A specially created commission started in 1882 to test both foreign and domestic constructions. In 1889 the commission was offered his design of 3-line caliber rifle (a line was 1/10 inches, so 3 lines were 7.62 mm) by Russian artillery officer Sergei Ivanovich Mosin. At the same time, a prototype of 3.5 caliber rifle was also submitted by Belgian Leon Nagant. Although the commission had originally selected Nagant's rifle, later they opted for the domestic construction and made a compromise. Mosin's rifle was supposed to use the charging mechanism by Emile and Leon Nagant. The first tests of the gun took place in 1890. To Mosin's originally single-shot rifle was attached a compartment for 5 rounds.
The rifles reached the units in 1891. The official designation for Mosin-Nagant guns read the Trechlinejnaja Vintovka Obrazca 1891 Goda (The 3-line rifle model 1891). The first batch of 500,000 rifles was produced by French arms factory Manufacture d’ armes de Châtellerault. Russian factories began production in 1893 in the cities of Tula and Izhevsk. Within three years they produced more than 1.4 million pieces of rifles.
In 1930, the Mosin-Nagant model 1891 was modified. The new type bore the designation of 1891/30 or also type 1891/1930.
