Rifles Spagin PPSh 41, cal. 7,62 x 25 mm
A legend called "Ivan"
The PPS-41 submachine gun was rather similar to the PPD-40. It also had the receiver passing into the barrel jacket with ventilation holes, and it fired single shots and bursts from a massive dynamic breech. At the same weight 5.45 kg with a 71–round drum magazine, however, it was longer (843 versus 788 mm) and also had a longer barrel (269 versus 260 mm), thanks to which at higher muzzle velocity (about 500 m / s) it reached cadence up to 900 rounds per minute (PPD-40 „only“ 800) and effective range of 120 m (PPD-40 about 100 m). An important innovation of the Shpagin was the original ending of the barrel jacket exceeding the muzzle and topped with a sloping plate with the barrel bore and other holes on the top and sides. Thus a simple, but effective compensator was created which not only dampened recoil, but also the after fire lift of the rifle, thereby increasing its accuracy.
The most essential on the PPS-41 submachine gun, which soon got the nickname "Ivan", however, was the simple construction utilizing inexpensive materials (especially sheet metal stampings), allowing it to be produced not only in armament factories, but also in former completely civilian factories with only minimum machinery modifications and basic workforce retraining. It had enormous importance, especially at the beginning of the war when the Soviets suffered huge losses in live force and equipment, and when in need, they even assembled cut asunder barrels from old 7.62 mm Mosim-Nagant model 1891 units into Spagins. More than 5 million pieces of PPS-41 submachine guns, which later received also a 35-round segment cartridge box magazine, were made in 1941-1945.
Several thousand of these guns with respectable firepower were delivered by Soviets in helping the SNP in Slovakia. Interestingly - the most common German submachine gun MP-40, made in the number of over 1 million units and incorrectly referred to as the "Schmeisser" (though constructed by H. Vollmer, and H. Schmeisser had nothing to do with) had 32-round straight box magazines (9 x 19 mm Para) weight of 4.7 kg, thaoretical cadence of 500 rounds per minute and the effective range of about 100 m.
