Georg Luger had the Luger pistol patented in 1898. Since 1900 it started being produced in Germany by Ludwig Loewe's Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). The pistol was usually very well executed, in its time it was one of the most reliable self-loading guns. The main disadvantage was a relatively high production complexity, inappropriate when it comes to service weapons. The pistol was produced in many varieties. It is well known mainly as the "P-O-EIGHT" or "O-EIGHT". In fact, this popular label applies only to its variant, as it was officially accepted into the arms of the Reichswehr beofre World War I.
